This adorable heart shape filet square crochet pattern is a great easy pattern using double crochet stitches and chain spaces. The pattern features written directions as well as an easy to follow stitch diagram. This filet square is great for use as part of a blanket, a washcloth, or anything else you can think of!

This heart shape square is one of six shapes created for a Shapes and Blocks Baby Blanket. The other shapes include a star, a circle, a square, a diamond, and a triangle.

I have put a neutral colored border, different from the main square around each square to make the edges nicer and to make it easier to sew into a blanket. You could of course choose to add the border in the same color as the square, in a contrasting color, or skip it altogether!

About The Filet Stitch

Filet crochet is a method where a stitch (usually double crochet) is used in combinations with chain stitches to create a pattern of either a solid background with a shape done in chain spaces or a chain space background with the shape done in double crochets. It is an easy type of crochet to grasp, but it is important to understand that the chain spaces and the tops of the stitches are worked the same way.

Yarn to Use

For this heart shape filet crochet pattern I used Simply DK Paintbox yarns, they are a size 3, light, or DK labeled yarn. This yarn is perfect for a baby blanket because it is light and has a wonderful selection of colors!

You could use a #4 worsted weight yarn if you choose, but don’t forget to size up your hook too. If you do this your finished square will be larger than the dimensions I have given.

Hook to Use

The recommended hook for the Paintbox Simple DK yarn is a 4 mm G6 size hook. That is what I used to create the heart shape filet square.

I like Susan Bates In-Line Hooks, such as the one you can purchase here.

The gauge you get with this hook is somewhat important. If your gauge for this project is off from what I have given your square may look a bit more spaced out or scrunched together.

I always recommend checking gauge, especially because it may effect how much yarn you need to complete the project. But if you are not concerned with this, use whatever hook gives you your desired appearance.

Pattern Notes

This pattern is flat in a back and forth motion. There is no “right side” or “wrong side” for this pattern, the finished square will look the same from both sides.

Each row has 31 stitches in it. The chain spaces count as a stitch.

The chain 2 stitches at the start of each row do not count as a stitch.

This pattern can be started in 1 of 2 ways. The first way listed uses foundation double crochet stitches in row 1. An alternative to start this pattern is to create a chain and then work a row of double crochet in that chain. See the row directions for more information.

See the stitch diagram at the bottom of this post for more information.
