Free baby blanket crochet pattern with a fun simple texture that’s easy and quick! This Lemon Squeezy Baby Blanket crochet pattern uses the lemon peel stitch, which is a combo of a single crochet and a double crochet, and the spike stitch in a lovely striped three color combo! The pattern includes written directions and step by step photo instructions. It’s the perfect gender neutral pattern, but would also be lovely in boy or girl colors.

My Baby Blanket Inspiration

This pattern was inspired by sister in law, who is excitedly awaiting her and her husband’s first child. It’s a boy!! The whole family is very excited!!

When she first told us she was expecting, I quickly developed a list a mile long of all the things I wanted to make for the new baby. This blanket was at the top of the list. At the time I started it, we didn’t know if she was expecting a boy or girl, so I wanted to choose gender neutral colors. I went with yellow, grey, and white because they were their wedding colors.

Spikes and Stripes

I just love the combination of stitches for this blanket! I’ve used spike stitches in stripes like this before in my cascading icicles beanie crochet pattern.

BUT the use of the lemon peel stitch gives this blanket a soft texture that brings out the best of both stitches 🙂

Baby Blanket Crochet Pattern

Skill Level

Beginner/Easy. Know how to complete chain stitches, single and double crochet stitches, the standing single crochet and the spike stitch.

Finished Size

30” tall x 28” wide

Gauge

15 sts x 20 rows = 4 in wide X 4 in tall

Materials Needed

• 1050 yds of dk weight yarn in 3 colors – I used two 50 gram balls (175 yds per ball) of each
  • Sidar Snuggly in light grey (Color A)
  • Dreambaby DK in pale yellow (Color B)
  • Dreambaby DK in white (Color C)
• H8/5 mm Hook – Get an aluminum set of tapered crochet hooks here
• Yarn Needle & Scissors

Stitches & Abbreviations

• Chain (Ch)
• Stitch (St)
• Single Crochet (SC)
• Double Crochet (DC)
• Spike Double Crochet (SpDC) *See Special Stitches
• Standing Single Crochet (SSC) *See Special Stitches

Special Stitches

Spike Double Crochet Stitch (SpDC) YO. Insert hook into stitch (always 2 rows below in this pattern). Pull up a loop through desired stitch to height of other stitches in row. (YO and pull through 2 loops) 2x. See pattern notes below for more info.

Standing Single Crochet (SSC) only used for the first stitch of a row to attach a new color. Attach yarn to hook with a slip knot. Insert hook into first stitch of row. Then complete single crochet stitch normally (YO and pull up a loop. YO and pull through both loops on hook).

Pattern Notes

Gauge is only important for this pattern if you wish to achieve the same dimensions as I have given. You may use a smaller or larger yarn or hook to work the project but know that your finished product will have a different size and appearance then what has been provided.

The chain 1 at the start of each row does not count as a stitch. The first single crochet should always go into the double crochet (the last stitch from the previous row).

Every row should begin with a single crochet and end with a double crochet.

This pattern is written so that you will always be working a single crochet into a double crochet and a double crochet into a single crochet. The only exception is the spike stitch, which is worked into a stitch 2 rows below.

The spike stitch made during the first row with a new color should always be worked in the top of a single crochet, 2 full rows down. The legs of the spike stitch should cover the single crochet directly under it and the double crochet under that. The spike stitch is made in the same spot as the double crochet stitch it covers.

The spike stitches should be in line with each other and should always be the same length as one another.

Another name for the stitch sequence used for this pattern is called the lemon peel stitch, which is partly where this pattern gets its name. Check out this tutorial for the Lemon Peel Stitch if you are having trouble getting it 🙂

When joining a new color, you can make weaving in the ends easier on yourself by laying the ends of both the new and old color over the tops of the stitches you are about to work. Leave the very ends uncovered so you can securely weave them in later.

To Change The Size

Feel free to make this blanket in whatever dimensions you’d like. I would highly recommend doing a gauge swatch before starting to know how many chains to start with to get your desired size.

The multiple to customize the size of this blanket is 4+3. The lemon peel stitch with the spike stitch needs a multiple of 4, 2 of the “+3” stitches are for another SC/DC combo after the last spike stitch and the last +1 is the turning chain.

If you work this blanket with 3 colors, your repeat will be the same as what I have written, but this blanket could be easy to make with 2 or 4 colors, or as many as you’d like! Repeat the pattern as written until the blanket is the length you want it to be.

Row 2. Turn, SC into second chain from the hook. DC in next st. *SC in next st. DC in next st. Repeat from * to end (118 sts).

Row 3 – 6. Ch 1 and turn (Does not count as a stitch). SC into first st. DC in next st. *SC in next st. DC in next st. Repeat from * to end. (118 sts)

Join color B yarn to hook

Row 7. SSC into first st. DC in next st. SC in next st. SpDC in next st. *SC in next st. DC in next st. SC in next st. SpDC in next st. Repeat from * across. (118 sts)

Row 8 – 12. Ch 1 and turn (Does not count as a stitch). SC into first st. DC in next st. *SC in next st. DC in next st. Repeat from * to end. (118 sts)

Join color C yarn to hook

Remaining Row Repeats

Row 37 – 54. Repeat Rows 19 – 36.

Row 55 – 72. Repeat Rows 19 – 36.

Row 73 – 90. Repeat Rows 19 – 36.

Row 91 – 108. Repeat Rows 19 – 36.

The blanket should repeat the 3 colors a total of 6 times.

Fasten off and weave in ends.
