I created this free scarf pattern design for absolute beginners. It would make a wonderful first project. It’s the perfect way to delve into the world of lacey crochet. I used a larger size hook to keep the stitches open and light but tried to keep the hook size small enough to still see the stitches.

Yarn For Your Summer Scarf Crochet Pattern

I made this pattern using some super fine yarn I had hanging out in my stash. It was given to me without a label so I don’t know what it is exactly. I can tell you it is a cotton yarn. I figured it was a size 1 superfine yarn using the wraps per inch method. This yarn produced 20 wraps per inch.

Since I don’t know exactly what I used I cannot share a link on where to get it – but I found some similar superfine size yarns you could use instead!

The Right Hook For The Job

For this summer scarf crochet pattern I wanted the stitches to have an open, lacy feel. When paired with the superfine fingering weight yarn a size I9 5.5mm crochet hook gave exactly the look I wanted!

For this pattern the hook size is not terribly important. If you prefer your stitches be a bit smaller feel free to use a smaller hook – but be aware, as the hook gets smaller the stitches will too, making them more difficult to see.

I like to use a Susan Bates in line hook like this one

If you prefer a tapered hook, this Boye hook is a good option too

I LOVE These Susan Bates Hooks with a polymer clay handle! They are the perfect combo of my favorite hooks with ergonomic handles.

Pattern Notes

This pattern is worked in flat, back and forth rows.

If you wish to make this scarf wider than I have listed, be sure your starting chain is a multiple of (3 + 4). The skipped chains and the double crochet to create the mesh pattern need a repeat of 3. The additional 4 starting chains are to skip back from the hook when working the first row. These contribute to the first box of the mesh pattern.

I have suggested stitch markers in several places. Each marker indicates a place in the pattern where a double crochet stitch will be worked into a chain stitch.

The chain 4 at the start of row 3 represents a double crochet and a chain 2.

After making the starting chain, count back from hook to 7th stitch and place a stitch marker. Place a stitch marker in every third stitch to end of chain. The last stitch marker should be in the last chain stitch. The markers are where you will work the double crochet stitches in row 2. If you have started with 19 chains, you will have 5 stitch markers.

While working the repeats of row 3, place a stitch marker in the 3rd chain from the hook. This chain represents the top of the double crochet and is useful to mark the placement of the last double crochet stitch for the next row. You will need 2 stitch markers to have these chains marked every time.
