These wonderful foundation chain crochet tutorial videos will teach you how to complete foundation chain stitches so your work will never be too tight to work into and you won’t have to worry about warped and lopsided work again!

Chain too tight to get your hook back into? Lopsided work may start with the very first stitches you crochet…

So, you’ve picked out the perfect pattern (or maybe you modified one to suit your needs)… you’ve chosen a great color yarn, or combination of several, and you’ve got your hooks ready to go. You get started with your exciting new project only to barely be able to complete the first row because somehow your foundation chain is so tight that you can barely fit the hook back into it.

Maybe you’ve even pulled and retried several times; should you use a larger hook for that starting chain? Should you just make it as is and hope that it doesn’t turn out lopsided? Perhaps going with the lopsided work and planning to block it out would be the thing to do? While all of these things are options, they are far from the best solution for this problem…

The first time I realized this was a problem I was no longer willing to live with was when I made my aunt a hat for Christmas, she was so sweet wearing the hat even though the chain row was so tight across her forehead it literally left a ring around her head. Remembering her struggle to get the hat on just to appease my 16 year old new crochet ego made me realize I needed to figure out a better way to start off a crochet project. There just had to be a better way, right?!? There is!!! And I’m about to tell you what it is…

A Better Way To Make The Foundation Your Work Deserves

The foundation chain stitch, is used to crochet the chain stitch as you go along with the first row of single crochet (or half double or double, or whatever). There is a foundation chain stitch that can match each of these.  Below I have compiled a list of my favorite YouTube videos that will show you how to complete each of the different types of foundation chain stitches. Use them in place of not only the chain stitches but also the first row that your pattern calls for.

Mastering this stitch has made starting just about every type of project so much easier! I never have to worry about whether that first row is going to mess up the rest of my project.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, a video is worth even more. These videos do a fantastic job explaining how to do the foundation chain and reiterates what I have said here about why you want to master these foundation chain crochet stitches. Check them all out for a complete understanding of the best way to start each and every one of your projects!
