This adorable square shape filet square crochet pattern is a fun and easy pattern using double crochet stitches and chain spaces. The flat back and forth design is simple for advanced beginners to easy skill level crocheters; and the square shape is especially easy. The pattern features written directions with photos as well as a stitch diagram. This filet square is perfect to use as part of a blanket, a coaster, a washcloth and more!

Super easy beginner filet square crochet pattern

This square shape filet square is one of six shapes created for a Shapes and Blocks Baby Blanket. The other shapes include a triangle, a circle, a star, a diamond, and a heart. But feel free to use this free crochet pattern for anything you would like.

The square is one of the easier shapes to complete because all of the open spaces are stacked either vertically or horizontally. This is a perfect absolute filet beginner pattern to start with!

It was always my intention to use this square as part of baby blanket so I used a neutral colored border around the edge of the square. Adding a border makes the edges nicer to sew together later on… Add a border in your color preference or skip it all together, the choice is yours!

About The Filet Stitch

Filet crochet is a method where a stitch (usually double crochet) is used in combinations with chain stitches to create a pattern of either a solid background with a shape done in chain spaces or a chain space background with the shape done in double crochets. It is an easy type of crochet to grasp, but it is important to understand that the chain spaces and the tops of the stitches are worked the same way.

Yarn to Use

For this series of shape filet crochet patterns I used Simply DK Paintbox yarns, they are a size 3, light, or DK labeled yarn. This yarn is perfect for a baby blanket because it is light and has a wonderful selection of colors!

You could use a #4 worsted weight yarn if you choose, but don’t forget to size up your hook too. If you do this your finished square will be larger than the dimensions I have given.

Hook to Use

The recommended hook for the Paintbox Simple DK yarn is a 4 mm G6 size hook. That is what I used to create this square shape filet square.

I like Susan Bates In-Line Hooks, such as the one you can purchase here. But my favorite set to use are the Susan Bates hooks coated in polymer clay to make thicker, easier to grasp handles. I’ve been using nothing else since I got my set from this shop on Etsy!

The look you get with the recommended hook is somewhat important. If your stitches for your square are too big or small your square may look a bit more spaced out or scrunched together.

I always recommend checking gauge, especially because it may effect how much yarn you need to complete the project. But if you are not concerned with this, use whatever hook gives you your desired appearance.

Each row has 31 stitches in it. The chain spaces count as a stitch.

The chain 2 stitches at the start of each row do not count as a stitch.

This pattern can be started in 1 of 2 ways. The first way listed uses foundation double crochet stitches in row 1. An alternative to start this pattern is to create a chain and then work a row of double crochet in that chain. See the row directions for more information.

See the stitch diagram at the bottom of this post for more information.
