This free Shapes & Blocks blanket crochet pattern is made with granny like solid filet squares. It is perfect for a baby, but could be made larger for an adult or as a throw blanket! This squares blanket crochet pattern is an easy level pattern made with squares in various shapes. The pattern has written directions along with photos and a stitch diagram for each shape.
Inspiration!
This inspiration for this pattern came from my daughter. When I found out I was pregnant with my first child, my husband and I decided we didn’t want to know the gender of our little bundle until baby was born.
Being a crochet lover, I wanted to make a blanket for my baby, and since I didn’t know if I was having a boy or a girl, I wanted to choose some gender neutral colors, some “girly” colors, and some “boy” colors. Then I tied all the squares together with a completely neutral color and added a border.
What You Need
Hook and Yarn
For this pattern I used Paintbox Simply DK yarn. It’s a light dk weight yarn available in several colors. I chose a dark and a light blue color, pink, coral, yellow and green for the squares and then a dark beige for the border. You may choose whatever colors you like; but if you want to have the same size blanket as I do, be sure to choose a dk weight yarn.
To go along with this size yarn I used a size G6 4mm crochet hook, the size hook that the yarn calls for. I prefer Susan Bates inline hooks, like this one.
Also needed for this pattern are a sturdy yarn needle to sew the squares together and a scissor.
Shaped Filet Squares Blanket Crochet Pattern
There are six different colors used for this blanket. You will need to make five squares of each shape. Feel free to mix and match the colors and shapes; I chose a color and made all five squares with that one color. You blanket will be beautiful either way!
Make five of each of the following shapes
Heart Shaped Filet Square – I used pink
Triangle Shaped Filet Square – I used green
Star Shaped Filet Square – I used yellow
Circle Shaped Filet Square – I used coral
Square Shaped Filet Square – I used dark blue
Diamond Shaped Filet Square – I used light blue

Easy: Knowledge of foundation, chain, double crochet stitches, and working into a chain space. Standing single and double crochet stitches for border.

46” tall x 37” wide
Finished Square Size
7.5” tall x 7” wide
Gauge
17 DC x 12 rows = 4 in wide X 4 in tall
Materials
- 1800 yds #3 light yarn in 6 colors for squares (300 yards of each color)
- 300 yds #3 light yarn in border color
- G 6/ 4 mm Hook
- Yarn Needle
Stitches & Abbreviations
- Foundation Double Crochet (FDC)
- Chain (Ch)
- Stitch (St)
- Single Crochet (SC)
- Double Crochet (DC)
- Skip (Sk)
- Standing Single Crochet (SSC)
- Standing Double Crochet (SDC)
Pattern Notes: Finishing the Blanket
Complete the border on each square, then decide the finished arrangement for the squares.
Use an invisible seam to sew the squares together according to your desired arrangement. If you’d like more help with the invisible seam, check out this free tutorial.
When sewing the squares together stitch them evenly along each edge.
Attach the yarn to the hook; work a standing double crochet into the corner of the sewn together blanket. Work 4 more double crochet stitches into the starting corner.
Work 1 double crochet into each stitch along the edges of the blanket and 5 double crochets into each corner of the blanket. Work a slip stitch into the top of the standing double crochet you began with. Tie off and sewn in all tails.
Enjoy Your Blanket
You are done! Congratulations!! The blanket can take a while to make, as blankets do… but the end result is beautiful and big enough that baby can enjoy it for years to come <3
